Poojas, Rituals & Sevas

Sacred rituals and ceremonies performed in the tradition of Hindu Almanac

Daily Rituals & Worship

The Chittaranjan Park Kali Mandir conducts daily poojas and rituals in strict accordance with the Hindu Almanac (Panjika). The temple priests perform elaborate worship of the presiding deities — Goddess Kali, Lord Shiva, and Radha-Krishna — from the early morning Mangal Arati through the evening Sandhyarati, ensuring that the sanctity and spiritual rhythm of the temple are maintained throughout the year.

In addition to the daily rituals, the temple celebrates a rich calendar of festivals and special poojas that reflect the deep-rooted Bengali Hindu traditions preserved by the Chittaranjan Park community.

Major Festivals & Poojas

Durga Puja

The Durga Puja at Chittaranjan Park Kali Mandir is one of the most celebrated in all of Delhi-NCR. The tradition began in 1977 and has since grown into a mega celebration that attracts thousands of devotees and visitors from across the city. The five-day festival — from Shashti to Dashami — features elaborate pandal decorations, traditional idol installation, anjali (congregational prayers), cultural programmes, dhunuchi naach, sindoor khela, and the emotional Bisarjan (immersion) procession. It is a grand reunion of the Bengali community and a spectacular showcase of art, culture, and devotion.

Kalika Puja (Kali Puja)

As the temple of Goddess Kali, Kalika Puja holds the most special significance here. Celebrated on the Amavasya (new moon) night of Kartik month, the temple comes alive with midnight rituals, deep (lamp) offerings, and intense devotional fervour. Devotees gather in large numbers for the night-long worship of the Divine Mother in her fierce and compassionate form. The entire temple complex is illuminated with thousands of earthen lamps, creating a mesmerising atmosphere of devotion.

Saraswati Puja

Saraswati Puja is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, arts, music, and learning. Celebrated on Vasant Panchami, the festival is particularly cherished by students and scholars who seek the Goddess's blessings for wisdom and academic excellence. Young children are often initiated into writing (Haatekhori) on this auspicious day. The temple is adorned with white and yellow flowers, and cultural performances are held in honour of the Goddess.

Annapurna Puja

Annapurna Puja venerates Goddess Annapurna, the divine mother of food and nourishment. This puja emphasises the sanctity of food and gratitude for sustenance. The temple organises special bhog (sacred food offering) and community feasting on this occasion, reinforcing the value of sharing and charity — principles deeply embedded in the temple's ethos.

Jagadhatri Puja

Jagadhatri Puja is celebrated with traditional fervour, honouring Goddess Jagadhatri — the "Sustainer of the World." This festival, observed a few days after Kali Puja, is especially popular in Bengali tradition and is marked by beautiful idol installations, ritualistic worship, and community celebrations within the temple complex.

Maha Shivratri

Maha Shivratri, the "Great Night of Lord Shiva," is observed with night-long devotion at the Shiva shrine within the temple. Devotees offer Bel leaves, milk, and water to the Shiva Linga while chanting sacred mantras. Special abhishekam (ritualistic bathing of the deity) is performed, and the temple remains open through the night for darshan and worship.

Ram Navami

Ram Navami celebrates the birth of Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu. The temple organises special puja, recitation of the Ramayana, and bhajan sessions on this day. It is a festival of dharma (righteousness), devotion, and the triumph of good over evil.

Bipattarini Puja

Bipattarini Puja is a uniquely Bengali observance dedicated to Goddess Bipattarini, who is worshipped for protection from dangers and adversities. Married women observe fasts and perform rituals seeking the well-being and safety of their families. The temple facilitates this traditional puja with proper Vedic rites.

Neel Shasthi

Neel Shasthi is an important Bengali festival dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Neelkantha form and Goddess Shasthi. Observed for the welfare and protection of children, this puja involves fasting and special prayers. The temple conducts the rituals as per traditional Bengali customs.

Holi Milan

Holi Milan at the temple is celebrated as a community gathering of joy, colours, and brotherhood. Rather than just playing with colours, the temple organises a dignified Holi Milan event with devotional music, cultural programmes, and the sharing of sweets — bringing the entire community together in a spirit of festivity and harmony.

Janmashtami

Janmashtami marks the birth of Lord Krishna and is celebrated with great devotion at the Radha-Krishna shrine. The temple organises midnight puja (as Lord Krishna was born at midnight), bhajans, kirtans, and Dahi Handi celebrations. Devotees fast through the day and break their fast after the midnight arati.

Rath Yatra

Rath Yatra commemorates Lord Jagannath's annual journey and is celebrated with a procession through the temple complex and surrounding areas. The temple organises the chariot pulling ceremony with great community participation, accompanied by devotional singing and distribution of prasad.

Basanti Puja

Basanti Puja is the spring worship of Goddess Durga, observed during the Chaitra Navratri. This puja celebrates the awakening of divine feminine energy in the spring season and is performed with traditional Bengali rituals at the temple, marking the arrival of the festive season.

Lakshmi Puja

Lakshmi Puja is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, prosperity, and fortune. Celebrated on the full moon night of Kartik month (Kojagari Lakshmi Puja in Bengali tradition), the temple conducts special worship with offerings of paddy, lotus, and sweets. Devotees seek blessings for prosperity and well-being.

Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi honours Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the deity of wisdom and new beginnings. The temple performs special Ganesh Puja with traditional rituals, modak offerings, and devotional chanting. Devotees seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha before commencing any new endeavour.

Personal Ceremonies & Sevas

The temple offers a range of personal religious ceremonies and sevas that can be booked by devotees for their families. These are conducted by the temple's experienced priests in accordance with traditional Vedic and Bengali customs:

  • Shradh — Annual rites performed in memory of departed ancestors, typically observed during the Pitru Paksha fortnight. The temple priests guide families through the complete Shradh ceremony with proper Vedic mantras and rituals.
  • Tarpan — Ritual offering of water and sesame seeds to departed ancestors and deities. Tarpan is an essential part of ancestral rites and is performed at the temple on auspicious days and during Pitru Paksha.
  • Naandimukh — An auspicious ceremony performed before significant family events such as weddings and Upanayan. It involves inviting blessings from ancestors and deities for the success and well-being of the family undertaking.
  • Annaprason — The traditional rice-feeding ceremony marking a child's first intake of solid food, typically performed when the child is six months old. The temple provides a sacred and joyful setting for this important milestone.
  • Upanayan — The sacred thread ceremony, a significant rite of passage in Hindu tradition marking the beginning of formal spiritual education. The temple conducts Upanayan with full traditional rites including the sacred Gayatri mantra initiation.
  • Adyasraddha — The first post-death funeral rite performed for the departed soul. The temple assists bereaved families in conducting this important ceremony with compassion and proper ritual observance.
  • Personal Obeisance — Devotees can arrange for personal puja, special arati, or floral offerings to the deities for birthdays, anniversaries, recovery from illness, or any occasion of personal significance. The temple priests perform the rituals on behalf of the devotee with personalised prayers.
